A través de la presente cuestionamos el apresamiento de la realizadora documental Elena Varela, prematuramenta acusada por los medios de comunicación y por las autoridades chilenas de colaborar en actividades terroristas, demandando para ella un juicio justo, de acuerdo al derecho nacional e internacional.

Más aún, demandamos la inmediata restitución de las cintas de cámara y sonido relativas a sus dos reportajes documentales que estaba produciendo, “Newen Mapu Che” y “Sueños del Comandante”, materiales que fueron confiscados por la polícía chilena al momento de su detención; no existe relación alguna entre estas películas y el crimen por el que Elena está bajo custodia al día de hoy.

Al presente no existe un documento oficial que establezca ni la confiscación de las cintas ni la justificación legal de tales acciones. La confiscación de este material es una abierta violación del derecho a mantener reserva sobre fuentes informativas, al presente protegida por la Ley de Prensa de Chile (19.733 art. 7º). Por tanto, tenemos razones para creer que Elena ha sido tomada prisionera antes que nada con la intención de detener su trabajo como reportera documental, por el que demandamos apoyo internacional en este caso, solicitando a las autoridades chilenas respetar atento cuidado a sus propias regulaciones en materia de libertad de expresión.




We hereby bring into question the imprisoning of chilean documentary reporter Elena Varela, prematurely accused by the media and chilean authorities as a collaborator on terrorist activities, and demand a fair trial for her, as according to international and national laws.

Furthermore, we do also demand the immediate restitution of the camera tapes and sound recording related to two documentary reports she was producing, “Newen Mapuche” and “Sueños del Comandante”, materials that were confiscated by the chilean police at the time of her detention; there is no relation between this films and the crime for which Elena is now under custody.

At present there is no official document stating neither the confiscation of these tapes nor the legal justification of such action. The confiscation of these tapes is an open violation of the right to maintain reserve on information sources, currently protected by the Press Law of Chile (Nº 19.733 article 7º). Therefore, we have reasons to believe Elena has been take prisioner first and foremost with the intention of stopping her work as a documentary reporter, for which we demand international support on this case, requesting the Chilean authorities to play close respect to their own regulation on freedom of speech.
